Flight Facilities: Triple J Mix UP Exclusives: 1972 – 1982

…And just when I thought I couldn’t love Flight Facilities any more, they go off and pull a stunt like this.

I would have thought their creative prowess was evidenced sufficiently in release of “Clair de Lune (ft. Christine Hoberg)” this past year (which would have been enough to sustain my interest and undivided attention for all of 2013), but this Aussie cohort stepped it up in January with a creative project that reignited my faith in the future of music.

In a series of custom mixes commissioned for Triple J, Flight Facilities not only highlights the best tracks in the history of dance music but also the cultural changes which allowed those songs to flourish.

The most recent, Week #1, consists of a sultry ride thru the hits of 1972-1982, including jams from the soul of Al Green to the disco of David Bowie. More importantly, you’ll find interwoven and complimentary audio clips from historical events ranging from Nixon’s resignation, the Vietnam war, John Lennon’s death, and the early onset of AIDS – basically, the historical events that birthed and nurtured the sounds of the times.

Flight Facilities plans to release another THREE mixes in the upcoming month which will bring dance music (and culture) up to the present era (i.e. 2012).

This Aussie cohort has certainly done their research and it’s evident in the care taken with this first mix. You can read more about the entire process here. I can only imagine the next three mixes will exemplify the same commitment to excellence.

Cheers, guys.

Jamie Jones – Change EP

After regularly heating dance floors this past summer (and beyond) with hits from his Hot Creations label, Jamie Jones begins 2013 with an EP release highlighting a slightly different aspect of his musicality. Hot Trax, a subsidiary of Hot Creations, was formed to curate Jones’ underground aesthetic and the Change EP is the first release in that vein. These tracks have noticeably more of a warehouse vibe, albeit still marked by that characteristic grooviness that Hot Creations is known for. My personal favorite is “Road to the Studio (Fly Mix),” but I’m expecting to hear all three tracks on the dance floor as we make our way into 2013.

Death Grips – “COME UP AND GET ME”

Death Grips’ newest video, clocking in at just under 13 minutes, is a continuous series of black and white clips shot in what appears to be a Los Angeles hotel room. Death Grips has never been one to shy away from avant garde interpretations, and this video is no exception. The music kicks in at around the 8:47 mark, but if you have the time, it’s an interesting experience to watch all the way through. Needless to say, I’m a fan.

Spotlight: Team Supreme

I recently discovered Team Supreme on SoundCloud and haven’t been able to stop listening. This beat-making collective, made up of eighteen producers, operates under the following guidelines:

“Every week a different producer picks two samples and a BPM.

The files get passed around, and everybody uses the guidelines to make a beat.

Cyphers drop Tuesdays.”

All I can say is, wow. This is exactly the kind of creativity that drives emerging music. On a weekly basis these guys lock in a great mix of hip-hop, futurebass, fusion, and trap that defies boundaries and provides the listener with about fifteen minutes of mind-blowing music. I’d highly recommend for fans of The Gaslamp Killer (Low End Theory), Diplo, Flying Lotus, and Death Grips. I expect they’ll be heavy on the radar in 2013.

They’ve got a show on January 29th at the Echo – make sure you come check it out!
